SYNOPSIS
An intrepid band of explorers headed by Gabriel Bonvalot, France’s greatest explorer, and his partner, Prince Henri d’Orléans, attempt to be the first living Europeans to reach Lhasa. Before they leave Paris, Bonvalot meets Camille Dancourt, the beautiful, strong-willed wife of a French surveyor who disappeared in Tibet, who desperately wishes to join the expedition. When the caravan sets out they face freezing temperatures, violent winds, mountain sickness, hostile Tibetans, duplicitous Chinese Mandarins, and a beguiling Tibetan Buddhist princess with a deadly secret. When the explorers reach Tibet, they discover a land of mystery and intrigue, a land of danger that promises them only one thing: death. On the verge of collapse, Bonvalot realizes they must resort to deadly force if they ever wish to escape Tibet alive. (provided by the author)

My favourite explorers have to be Sir Francis Drake and the coureurs de bois, who explored Canada. I can’t think of a book, about any of these offhand, but I can recommend one about une fille du roi, who came to Canada and lived during this time, “Bride of New France” by Suzanne Desrochers is about a young girl, who was imprisoned in the notorious women’s prison in Paris and was given a chance to leave, if she became une fille du roi. Another true story, about a young sixteen year old, who came to Canada to be one of the last fur traders of the Hudson Bay Co. is “The Last of the Gentlemen Adventurers: Coming of Age in the Arctic. Edward Beauclerk Maurice”. In his diary he tells of his life among the Eskimos.
I can recommend 2 excellent books about adventurers in Tibet and one biography of a young Tibetan boy.
“Seven Years in Tibet” is the true story of Heinrich Harrer, a German, who was imprisoned by the English as an enemy national, being in British India when the war started. He escaped to Tibet and became a valued advisor to the Dalai Lama. When the Chinese invaded Tibet they fled. It was made into a movie with Brad Pitt.
“The Way of a Transgressor” by Negley Farson is the true story of an adventurer, much like Jack London. Negley Farson was trying to start up a company in Russia, when the Russian Revolution broke out. A lot of the book deals with his next job as a “newspaperman”, travelling across the wilds of Asia, following the path of the Silk Road. I think is was really a fact finding mission as a spy, accompanied by a lone woman and a group of Mongolian nomads.
The last book about Tibet is “My Tibetan Childhood: When Ice Shattered Stone”
by Naktsang Nulo. It is the story of a 10 year old boy, who accompanied his parents and older brother on their nomadic travels. They get caught up in the Chinese invasion of Tibet. His parents are killed and he and his brother are thrown in prison. This is their story of survival, in a brutal prison, while facing dire famine. His story is very inspirational.
