SYNOPSIS

Amateur sleuth Emily Cabot’s journey once again takes her to a world’s fair—the Paris Exposition of 1900. Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer is named the only female U. S. commissioner to the Exposition and enlists Emily’s services as her secretary. Their visit to the House of Worth for the fitting of a couture gown is interrupted by the theft of Mrs. Palmer’s famous pearl necklace. Before that crime can be solved, several young women meet untimely deaths and a member of the Palmer’s inner circle is accused of the crimes. As Emily races to clear the family name she encounters jealous society ladies, American heiresses seeking titled European husbands, and more luscious gowns and priceless jewels. Along the way, she takes refuge from the tumult at the country estate of Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. In between her work and sleuthing, she is able to share the Art Nouveau delights of the Exposition, and the enduring pleasures of the City of Light, with her husband and their children.

SYNOPSIS

A memoir by the critically acclaimed actor Cliff Simon.
Paris Nights, the memoir of a South African soldier turned performer in the world’s most famous cabaret, delivers in a hugely entertaining way.
Little did Cliff Simon know that a single phone call and a one-way ticket to Paris would ultimately change his life forever.
Now the acclaimed television and film actor shares his journey from Johannesburg to the Moulin Rouge to Hollywood in his debut memoir, Paris Nights: My Year at the Moulin Rouge.
From a young age Cliff Simon knew he was headed towards big places. Having grown up as both a skilled gymnast and a competitive swimmer, performance was in his blood. But with the onset of Apartheid and the looming threat of war, he and his Jewish family soon retreated from Johannesburg, South Africa to the London countryside. Before he knew it, he joined the British swim team and was near Olympics-bound with a full-ride offer to a United States university.
But something wasn’t quite right. Instead, Cliff returned home and enlisted in the South African Air Force. Cliff’s habit of impulsive risk-taking would continue but ultimately pave the foundation for an experience most of us would only dream of. After he was honorably discharged, twenty-seven-year-old Cliff worked a series of odd jobs at a resort near the Indian Ocean until he received a phone call from an old friend inviting him to join him at the iconic Moulin Rouge.
Here begins the story of Cliff’s meteoric rise at the Moulin from swing dancer to principal in the glamour filled show, Formidable; his offstage encounters with street thugs and diamond smugglers; and the long nights filled with after parties and his pick of gorgeous women. Encounter the magic, the mayhem, and the glory that was and still is the Moulin Rouge.

PRAISE FOR ‘PARIS NIGHTS’

“He writes of Paris as no one has done before, the after-dark city of night clubs, dance groupies, street fights, and shady characters. His is a truly singular story, and it’s told with humor, swagger, and absolute honesty.” –Marcia DeSanctis, author of 100 Places in France Ever Woman Should Go

The French Village Diaries

It was very easy to slip into Emily’s narrative and I enjoyed experiencing Paris in 1900 with her.
At some point during the book I suspected every character we met and couldn’t wait to find out exactly who was behind the thefts and murders and how they did it.
It is a well-researched book set in a fabulous era with a gripping mystery and I loved trying to piece together the facts to work out who was guilty.

A Holland Reads

The author did a good job of capturing the time and place making this historically accurate.
This book will capture your attention from the first page and not let go until the end.
A good book and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

Words And Peace

Perfect example of how to integrate smartly the fruit of your research into a historical novel. Luscious descriptions and suspenseful mystery. Very enjoyable.

View from the Birdhouse

The historical details in this book are absolutely fascinating.
The mystery is well paced and complex, and it kept me guessing.
Now I really want to read the rest of the books as well!

Through her extensive research, Frances McNamara has brought to life the periods of the Gilded Age and the Belle Epoque.
This is an author, who is new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this entry in the Emily Cabot series and I will be sure to search out other titles by Frances McNamara.

WildmooBooks

This was an enjoyable read that never lagged.
There was a nice balance between the historical scene with descriptions of fashion and Paris with the crimes and tension of the plot. The mystery had me guessing.
I look forward to reading an Emily Cabot mystery set in Chicago.

Queen of All She Reads

McNamara’s book is filled with colorful descriptions of haute couture at the turn of the 20th century, the historical and beautiful sights of Paris and a well-developed central character.  If you like historical mysteries and reading about high fashion, this is a book you will most certainly enjoy.
I did enjoy Ms. McNamara’s voice and her descriptions were very detailed.  You could tell she had done quite a bit of research and she did an excellent job discussing all of the couture houses in existence at the time.
I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of this author’s work.
