SYNOPSIS

Perfume is the essence of beauty, the heart of illusion, the soul of desire. It is my past, my present, my future. —from the journal of Danielle Bretancourt

When French perfumer and aristocrat Danielle Bretancourt steps aboard a luxury ocean liner, leaving her son behind in Poland with his grandmother, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. The year is 1939, and the declaration of war on the European continent soon threatens her beloved family, scattered across many countries. Traveling through London and Paris into occupied Poland, Danielle searches desperately for the remains of her family, relying on the strength of Jonathan Newell-Grey, a British shipping heir and Royal Navy officer. Finally, in the wake of unspeakable tragedy, she is forced to gather the fragments of her impoverished family and flee to America. There she vows to begin life anew, in 1940s Los Angeles.

Amidst the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Danielle works her way up from meager jobs to perfumer and fashion designer. Still, personal happiness eludes her. Can her sheer force of will attract the elusive love she desires, or will it only come at the ultimate cost? (provided by the author)

[NB: Significant changes, different version and storyline, including the ending, from the self-published version of 2012!]

TOUR QUOTATIONS

For The Hook of a Book

You can see quite easily upon reading that Moran did extensive research into the time and place for this book. Couple that with exquisite character development, with characters who are fully dimensional and connective, as well as lush descriptions and fluid sentences, and this novel came together as one that I had a hard time ever putting down. It’s a novel that absorbs and captivates you, compelling to read it in one sitting.
Moran’s ability to take you back in time and place, opening your mind and senses, is truly her gift as a storyteller and a writer.

Indiereadergil0329

The Scent of Triumph is a triumph. I utterly enjoyed it; pulling me in right away.
I would highly recommend this book. There were so many good elements in here. Jan Moran definitely did her research and did it well. I was impressed; and it seems like it’s hard to impress me these days. I hope you check this one out.

The French Village Diaries

This beautiful looking cover drew me in and I immediately found myself in a very engaging book with a storyline that made it very difficult to put down.
This book is more than just a romance novel and would appeal to those who enjoy reading about the French perfume and fashion industries and those with an interest in historical fiction set during the 1930’s and 1940’s.

Musings of a Writer & Unabashed Francophile

What I loved most about this book is that it felt epic.
There was a real sense of time and of history.
There are threads of romance, history… really there’s a bit in this book for everyone. I’m definitely going to look into the author’s other works now that I’ve read this one

View From The Birdhouse

I love historical fiction and find the 1940’s a fascinating era, so I knew I would enjoy this read.
The book is a fast paced read, and would make a good movie. I think fans of sweeping books with a historical 1940’s setting will enjoy Scent of Triumph.

I Wish I Lived In a Library

This was one of those books I was a little hesitant to pick up because I knew it was going to be hard to put down!  From the first page I was hooked and followed Danielle’s journey with a lump in my throat.  I really couldn’t turn pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next.
If you’re interested in perfume or love books set in wartime this is not one to miss.

Book Nerd

I have to hand it to the author, I never would have thought that perfume would be interesting to read about, but it was.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to have their senses involved in this beautiful story.
The writing was engaging and the story well paced.

I Am, Indeed

A story that spans multiple years, it was a read that was intriguing.
The war years were horrid, and Danielle’s ability to morph and change to fit situations was beautifully done.
Several twists and turns lead the reader on an emotional journey that keeps Danielle at the forefront.
Danielle’s story does stick with readers long after the final page is turned.

Caroline Wilson Writes

The Scent of Triumph is an old-fashioned melodramatic yarn that will suck you in.
Readers of Barbara Taylor Bradford and Sidney Sheldon will warm to this tale of triumph in the face of tragedy.

Bookramblings

It was interesting to see the perfume making and how sensible she was to different smells.
WWII setting was what drew me to this book so I liked the first part more than her time in Los Angeles.
