SYNOPSIS

Amateur sleuth Emily Cabot’s journey once again takes her to a world’s fair—the Paris Exposition of 1900. Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer is named the only female U. S. commissioner to the Exposition and enlists Emily’s services as her secretary. Their visit to the House of Worth for the fitting of a couture gown is interrupted by the theft of Mrs. Palmer’s famous pearl necklace. Before that crime can be solved, several young women meet untimely deaths and a member of the Palmer’s inner circle is accused of the crimes. As Emily races to clear the family name she encounters jealous society ladies, American heiresses seeking titled European husbands, and more luscious gowns and priceless jewels. Along the way, she takes refuge from the tumult at the country estate of Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. In between her work and sleuthing, she is able to share the Art Nouveau delights of the Exposition, and the enduring pleasures of the City of Light, with her husband and their children.

The French Village Diaries

It was very easy to slip into Emily’s narrative and I enjoyed experiencing Paris in 1900 with her.
At some point during the book I suspected every character we met and couldn’t wait to find out exactly who was behind the thefts and murders and how they did it.
It is a well-researched book set in a fabulous era with a gripping mystery and I loved trying to piece together the facts to work out who was guilty.

A Holland Reads

The author did a good job of capturing the time and place making this historically accurate.
This book will capture your attention from the first page and not let go until the end.
A good book and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

This was an enjoyable read that never lagged.
There was a nice balance between the historical scene with descriptions of fashion and Paris with the crimes and tension of the plot. The mystery had me guessing.
I look forward to reading an Emily Cabot mystery set in Chicago.

Queen of All She Reads

McNamara’s book is filled with colorful descriptions of haute couture at the turn of the 20th century, the historical and beautiful sights of Paris and a well-developed central character.  If you like historical mysteries and reading about high fashion, this is a book you will most certainly enjoy.
I did enjoy Ms. McNamara’s voice and her descriptions were very detailed.  You could tell she had done quite a bit of research and she did an excellent job discussing all of the couture houses in existence at the time.
I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

Through a set of complex characters, thrillers like this one can also offer great messages on human condition. It works. Try it.

Musings of a Writer & Unabashed Francophile

Once this book got going, I really couldn’t put it down.
I like thrillers and mysteries where I can’t easily identify the killer(s).
What intrigued me the most, beyond the external plot, were the details involved in the running of Notre Dame.
Definitely an excellent read. I look forward to seeing what M. Ragougneau writes next.

SYNOPSIS

When Grace Hansen finds a box belonging to her beloved grandfather, she has no idea it holds the key to his past—and to long-buried family secrets. In the box are his World War I diaries and a cryptic note addressed to her. Determined to solve her grandfather’s puzzle, Grace follows his diary entries across towns and battle sites in northern France, where she becomes increasingly drawn to a charming French man—and suddenly aware that someone is following her…
Through her grandfather’s vivid writing and Grace’s own travels, a picture emerges of a man very unlike the one who raised her: one who watched countless friends and loved ones die horrifically in battle; one who lived a life of regret. But her grandfather wasn’t the only one harboring secrets, and the more Grace learns about her family, the less she thinks she can trust them.

The Fictional 100

M. K. Tod has shown her commitment to deeply researched, intelligently crafted, and beautifully written historical fiction. I have read and reviewed the latter two novels, and I found both of them to be satisfying as fiction, unsettling as history, and tremendously moving in their treatment of people caught in the rough grasp of war, trying to keep on living and loving.

Eclectictales

I greatly enjoyed reading Time and Regret. It has a nice balance of the historical fiction and present day mystery and story that come together quite nicely. Highly recommended!

Words And Peace

Powerful historical mystery. A unique triple level of narration helps reach a healthy balance between the emotional journey of the narrator and what her grandfather went through during WWI. Clever.

Book and Ink

The writing was perfect and I loved the style.
The writer managed to add all elements – drama, romance, mystery; and politics in the right proportion.
With perfect narration, spot on characterization and a great setting, this book was one perfect read.

Library of Clean Reads

Time and Regret is a well-written touching story with a dual timeline.
I became so immersed in this novel that I read it in two days.
It is a testament to this author’s writing skills that she could so easily transition from contemporary life in the sleepy towns of France to that of war-torn France in 1915.
This is her third novel and I would now love to read her previous books. This book will be listed in my Best Reads of 2016 post. Highly recommended to lovers of historical fiction and women’s fiction.

Writing the Renaissance

TIME AND REGRET successfully melds elements of women’s fiction, historical fiction, and traditional mystery into an entertaining and satisfying read. A competent historian and skillful storyteller, M. K. Tod should certainly harbor no regrets in sharing this highly engaging tale with a broad audience.

Musings of a Writer & Unabashed Francophile

I couldn’t stop reading.
Things built, and the ending wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. In a good way.
It was also refreshing to have a novel partly set in 1991. It’s two historical periods in one novel.
Definitely a book to pick up.

I am, Indeed

The second book that I’ve read from M.K. Tod, I enjoy the detail (historic and not) with which she infuses her titles, making the past come alive and relevant to readers and characters alike.
Tod’s writing lends itself to description, the ability to use diary entries to feed the visual impressions the words create show great skill.

The Reading Queen

I really enjoyed Time and Regret.
The look into a soldier’s life and the great mystery left behind by Grace’s grandfather was interesting.
I’m thoroughly satisfied with how everything beautifully wrapped up.
A must read.

A Hollande Reads

I am a fan of M.K.’s and could not wait to read another book by her. Her writing style is nice and easy to read.
I could tell that the author did her research through the descriptions she gave.
A good book and I am looking forward to the next one by her.

The French Village Diaries

There are plenty of twists and turns.
The further into the book I got, the more difficult it was to put it down.
This is the third historic novel I have enjoyed from MK Tod, but the added sense of mystery in this novel has made it my favourite.

Just One More Chapter

I enjoyed the story, the mystery and Grace’s adventure.
There was so much about this book that really enjoyed as a reader and also on a personal level.
Definitely a book that I highly recommend.

Redhead.with.book

History, mystery and romance are intertwined in this novel about World War I and the art world.
I really enjoyed Time and Regret. It is a work of fiction but the historical aspect of the book was also quite interesting.

Impressions in Ink

I love the story, Time and Regret.
Through Grace’s lens and taste-bud, I too experienced delicious food and the beautiful sites.
The last few paragraphs of the story, on page 349, is beautiful. It is wise advice for all of us.
