SYNOPSIS

French Illusions: My Story as an American Au Pair in the Loire Valley, is the first of two books based on the author’s diaries.
It’s 1979 and Linda needs to learn a language fast in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a flight attendant. Broke yet determined, she chooses French immersion and contracts to become an au pair for a wealthy family in the Loire Valley. Yielding to poor judgment, she lies on her application and claims to speak basic French, confident she’ll be forgiven once she arrives at the Château de Montclair.
As she struggles to adapt to her challenging new environment with the hard-to-please Madame Dubois and her two incomprehensible children, Linda signs up and attends language classes at the local university. When she encounters Adam, a handsome young student, her life becomes more complicated—much more complicated—adding fuel to her internal battle for independence. Join Linda on her adventure of discovery and romance in an extraordinary part of the world.

TOUR QUOTATIONS

The Discerning Reader

I never realized how vulnerable an au pair is until I read Linda’s story.
A story of one young woman’s experience as an au pair as she finds her place in the world, stumbles upon love and enjoys meandering through France. A great story for those curious about life as an au pair or those considering.

Griperang’s Bookmarks

The author did such a good job in her writing that you felt as if you were right there along for the ride with her. I like the way this book was written, I felt as if a friend was sharing her diary with me.

I always wanted to visit this region of France so charming and with this book I was able to do it at least virtually. The descriptions were so vivid and the story so compelling that really seemed to be there with Linda.
The story is never boring and I really loved every single page.

I could have taken the 7: 50, or even the 8: 53. It’s Monday. Mondays are dead quiet at work. It’s just that I couldn’t take it anymore. What was I thinking, staying Sunday night. I don’t know what came over me. Two days are more than enough.

The 6.41 to ParisClick on the book cover to know more about the book

I wonder what defines me, now. What characteristics I had already ten, fifteen, or twenty years ago, and that I didn’t try to do anything about. Like separating the soft part of the bread from the crust and rolling it into tiny balls, while continuing to talk with someone, who would be transfixed, even concerned: he’s not going to go and eat those things, is he? Oh yes he is. Like making sure the alarm on the clock radio is set at the right time, checking four times in a row, otherwise I have to start all over. In another life, I must have had many obsessive-compulsive behaviors; in this life, that’s the only one I have.
