SYNOPSIS
A mesmerizing tale of art and passion in Belle Époque France
As a woman, aspiring sculptor Camille Claudel has plenty of critics, especially her ultra-traditional mother. But when Auguste Rodin makes Camille his apprentice—and his muse—their passion inspires groundbreaking works. Yet, Camille’s success is overshadowed by her lover’s rising star, and her obsessions cross the line into madness.
Rodin’s Lover brings to life the volatile love affair between one of the era’s greatest artists and a woman entwined in a tragic dilemma she cannot escape. [provided by the author]
ADVANCE PRAISE
“Dazzling!….. In Rodin’s Lover, author Heather Webb brings to life, with vivid detail, the story of brilliant and tormented sculptress Camille Claudel and the epic love affair with the legendary sculptor who worshiped her. Deeply moving and meticulously researched, this book will capture your heart, then hold it tightly long after the final page.” –Anne Girard, author of Madame Picasso
“A rich, sensuous novel…[was] written with great empathy for the very human Rodin and his lover, this novel of the visceral world of the 19th century Paris ateliers, of clay-stained dresses and fingernails, lithe models who vow to remain and then go, family love which stays through all difficulties and talent which endures, comes vividly to life.” ––Stephanie Cowell, author of Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet

I don’t have a favorite historical fiction featuring an artist but have actually been looking for some historical fiction books. I like historical novels.

Did you read a good historical novel recently?

Hi Emma, I already commented on another blog on the tour about art books, but I thought you might like this book recommendation too. There is a great, inexpensive hardcover book from my local art gallery, The Art Gallery of Hamilton. They published all letters written by a famous Canadian painter, William Blair Bruce. It is extremely interesting reading, since he lived a fascinating life. He moved to Paris, during the Belle Epoque to study and to paint. Later, he married Caroline Benedicks, an affluent Swedish sculptor. I believe her family was wealthy and in government, so they moved back to Sweden.Unfortunately, he became ill and died at a fairly young age. A lot of his paintings are in a museum in Sweden and in the Art Gallery of Hamilton. He bequeathed paintings to the city of Hamilton.

very interesting. As you may know, I am also an artist (http://rocksbyemmenauelle.com), so I’m doubly interested. What’s the exact title of that book? Is it this: Letters home, 1859-1906: The letters of William Blair Bruce??

That might be the title. The book being sold by the art gallery has no dust jacket, red binding, and is $10 Canadian. I checked it on Goodreads and that is the book, that I have.
His most moving painting, that is in the gallery collection,is called “The Hunter”. I am still mesmerized each time, that I see it. It is a haunting painting of a hunter, who is collapsing and dying in the arctic and we see his spirit leaving his body and continuing on. It is the first picture on Google of images for William Blair Bruce.

I don’t read a lot of historical fiction, but as a fan of Balzac, Zola and a few other French authors, this one looks very interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hugo is in there too (as Rodin sculpted his bust, see: http://frenchart.umsl.edu/home/english/nineteenth-century/auguste-rodin-victor-hugo-1884/), and of course the poet Paul Claudel, Camille’s brother
