A well-designed cover that suggests professional publication is a draw when I’m on the lookout for major new literary fiction worhy of close reading. In general it draws my attention to books that do not merit consideration for my purposes, but I am always mindful of content(!) In this case, I am interested most in the book with the least visually compelling cover image IMHO —Couple Mechanics. Thanks for this, Kara S

Good point. Actually Couple Mechanics and Mon amie américaine were both published by Other Press, which specializes in literature in translation.

On this giveaway, for the question, I always seem to look at the cover of a book first and then read what it is about then decide on whether or not I want to read it. Funny thing is I do this for ebooks too. Weird hey?

I actually also tend to do this, though I have found great books with awful covers. so, which of these 4 covers do you prefer??

The cover for Journeys through France and Life is appealing and evokes the environment, and the beauty and serenity of a house which would be wonderful to live in. That cover is my favorite since it reflects the setting perfectly. I would love to visit this area and the house. A cover which is accurate and shows me the setting is important.
