I recently listened to the audiobook version of Alison Atlee’s THE TYPEWRITER GIRL. I didn’t know it was a love story when I sought to read it at first — I try to steer clear of fiction of the romantic variety. That said, between the unique characters and the sense of time and place, I actually found this love story to be quite charming! A pleasant surprise overall! Thanks for this great monthly opportunity. Cheers and best wishes, Kara S

I also usually don’t read romances, but sometimes I have found some good elements of romance in some historical novels

no, too emotional. In France as students, we study that period over and over again every year from 11 years old and up!

yes in my close family. you know, there are very few families in France who have not been touched by the Third Reich, even if they were not Jews. People betrayed for trying to organize the Resistance, men sent to forced labor to Germany, etc

Well…this is news to me…I am not an avid reader of WW1/WW2…but this sad bit of history is bone chilling. This is how I came to know about the book, the movie and some documentaries…

yes if you go to France/Belgium and around, and speak to locals, you will have a hard time finding a family who has not been directly affected

I have read so many good historical novels lately, but just today I finished a phenomenal one: Sisters of Shiloh! It is about two sisters who disguise themselves as men so they can fight in the Civil War. Loved it! I also read Rodin’s Lover and loved it!
